Snowman Image Transfer Project

Something we have really been enjoying at Markerland lately is image transferring (putting a printed image onto a raw wooden surface). It’s a great type of project for anyone to do, and can help you create both awesome art pieces and fun handmade gifts! Try it out this holiday season!!

This very simple process needs only a few supplies:
-An object made of plain, unfinished wood
Zig Decoupage Glue Marker
-Image(s) on paper, from a book or a printer
-Small spray bottle filled with water
-Extra markers if you want to do any additonal decorating (optional)

From start to finish, you will need several hours, or overnight, to let the piece dry inbetween steps.

See our step-by-step process of making a holiday snowman wooden wall hanging:

Step 1:
decopaugesnowman1

Choose your image from either a book, or print whatever you like off of the computer. Cut off as much surrounding paper as possible. Use the Zig Decoupage marker to generously cover the area on the wood that the picture will go onto, and then the top side of the image as well.

Step 2:
decopaugesnowman2

Press the image(s) face down onto the wood. Make sure that the glue is covering all areas where there is color and that the entire image is making complete contact with the wood.
*Tip: If you have white in your image, like with this snowman, make sure it has a slight color tint to it, since there is no white ink that will transfer- it is just the white paper, which will later be rubbed away..

decopaugesnowman5
With any image, especially if you are using words, remember that they will be flipped on the wooden surface, so be sure to print your text backwards!

Step 3:

Wait for the glue to TOTALLY dry. It will need several hours at least, if not left overnight.

Step 4:

 decopaugesnowman3

The image should now be transferred to the wood, so the paper is ready to be removed! The easiest way to do this is to spray it with water to soften the paper.

Step 5:
decopaugesnowman4a

Begin to rub the paper firmly enough for it to peel off, but gently enough to not remove the image as well. It may take several more sprays of water and a little time to get all of it removed, but afterwards- you will be left with your image on the wood!!

Step 6 (optional):
decopaugesnowman6b

If you’d like, you can use markers to add background color or special effects (like glitter), enhance the look of your image/text, or even to fix any trouble spots that may have peeled off. This can give your piece a much more artistic handmade quality, without needing too much artistic talent! 😉

(To finish this project, we used Zig Clean Color Real Brush watercolor markers, Posca paint markers, and Zig Wink of Stella Glitter Brush markers.)

There are plentiful possibilities with this craft.. Try transferring your images onto other wooden objects like boxes, ornaments, picture frames, and more!!

Kurecolor Ink Marbling

Our blog featured this technique a while back, but we loved it so much we had to revisit it for the holidays this year. Zig Kurecolor Ink bottles are made for refilling the Kurecolor markers, but have other uses as well! Try dropping some ink into a tray of foam shaving cream.. swirl the drops around a bit.. and then press cardstock, envelopes, paper ornaments, etc. facedown into the mixture. Then lift up, scrape off the foam, and you are left with a beautiful marbled color design!

KurecolorStep1

Get creative trying to make different swirl patterns! Or add a mix of different colors!

KurecolorStep2
After the first pass with your scraper (you can use a squeegee, piece of cardboard, etc..) there may still be some shaving cream left over on  your paper. You can gently remove it after it has dried a bit. Trying to wipe it off right away can smudge the swirls of color.

*This technique works best on thicker paper. If you want the same look on plain papers, or multiple copies of the same designs, make a “master copy” with cardstock, then use a copy machine to print your own unique cards, stationary, even gift wrap!

Decoupage Glue Pen

The art of decoupage was a big craze years back, and the craft has not gone away! Create some uniquely-made objects using scraps from books, tissue/wrapping/wall paper, magazine clippings, etc! Decoupage involves taking various cut outs/scrap papers and sealing them to an object, leaving a layered look with a glossy coat over the top. With the Zig Decoupage Marker, a glue/water mixture is already done for you and this craft becomes fast and easy!

A fun craft for any age! Create one-of-a-kind gifts.. or gift boxes! Also try decoupaging ornaments.. photo album covers.. flower vases.. See what interesting looks you can give any item with decoupage!

blog-DecoupageOrnaments
Newspaper and magazines are full of holiday clippings you can cut out for your crafts.
Layer different pictures and letters onto ornaments, gift boxes, etc. using the Decoupage glue pen!
We also tried sealing layers of yarn into a shape with the Decoupage glue and it worked, leaving us another awesome handmade ornament!

Some Tips:
-For rounded surfaces, try to use softer, more flexible materials that will bend around the shape easily.
-Things printed from an inkjet printer, or colored with certain markers, are more likely to have their color bleed when the decoupage glue gets them wet, so use caution and test a cut-out first if possible.
-To give your piece added protection and durability, cover the top layer with a sealant.

Zig Eraser Pens

One of our newest pens at Marker Supply, the Zig Eraser Pens work with alcohol-based markers on non-porous surfaces to create “reverse coloring” art! Color in a space or make a design with your colored markers (try the Zig Kurecolors or Zig Painty FX) and then write or draw over the color with the eraser pen to remove the color and make fun designs!
(Tip: Keep a piece of scrap paper or a tissue handy to clean the color off of the eraser pen tip after every few marks. This helps erase the color more completely in the first stroke. Depending on the thickness of the color, it could take a few passes to entirely erase the color coat.)

Window Art

Doing any special decorating on surfaces like your windows, mirrors, chalkboard walls, etc.? Zig has MANY paint markers specially designed for that task! Have fun making some lovely holiday artwork for your home or business!

windowdecor

Want your marks to stay on longer, maybe for outside windows in the rain or snow?
Choose a paint marker like the Zig Posterman or Zig Woodcraft. These will need to be removed with a household/window cleaner (or try the Scrubs wipes!) and should hold up if in contact with plain water.

Want your marks able to be removed more easily and without special cleaners?
Go with the Zig Wet Wipe or Zig Illumigraph markers. Their paint will wipe off with plain water on a damp cloth! Illumigraph markers are very fluorescent and look especially bright under black lights.

While Zig Woodcraft Markers work great for glass/chalkboard art, also try them for their traditional use: wood crafts!

Oil-Based Zig “Painty” Markers

Doing any decorating that needs some heavy-duty painted marks? Try using oil-based permanent paint markers! Zig features the Painty markers, that come in extra fine, fine & medium bullet tips and a very large selection of unique colors. A version of the Zig Painty marker that we LOVE for holiday crafts are the Zig Painty Twin markers.

These dual-ended pens are like having 2 pens in one!
Available in Gold & Silver with extra fine tips, or in Black & White with fine bullet tips.

There are dozens of paintys to choose from- great pens for adding a fun splash of color to projects of many kinds!

HOLIDAY DECORATING SERIES- PART 2- PEBEO

With the holidays approaching fast, we’ve begun putting together a few lists of marker projects for holiday decorating! Whether you are entertaining guests for dinner, needing fun projects for the kids, or just wanting to make your house or office a bit more festive- keep your eye on the Marker Supply blog! We’ll be highlighting products from several different brands, and a few ways you can use them this holiday season!

Our holiday decorating series continues with new ideas from our Pebeo products!!

………………………………………………………………………………………..

Imported from France, our Pebeo line has some special products that work great for holiday décor!

The greatest feature about Pebeo paints is that when used on surfaces that can be baked in an oven, the painted marks will become permanent after baking- so items like dishes can be washed and your artwork will stay put!
(Click here to see our blog about comparing different markers on painted dishes and what happens to each after washing..)

Remember to be patient with your Pebeo projects.. If you are new to glass/porcelain painting, it can seem a bit tricky at first. Have some “practice” surfaces if possible to try out your ideas on! Thrift stores and dollar stores carry lots of pieces you can get for cheap! Try different paint brushes/applying techniques as you learn how the paint works on these smooth, glossy surfaces. And keep in mind that you don’t need to have a crazy, elaborate design for every piece. Even simple markings- lines, dots, etc.- can have a beautiful look to them!

BLOG-pebeoproducts

The various forms of Pebeo paint- markers, bottled paint, and outliner tubes!
Each available in a variety of colors!

………………………………………………………………………………………..

A few tips as you begin:
-Clean your pieces thoroughly before painting. Use soapy water or rubbing alcohol to fully clean and degrease, and then let fully dry, giving you the best surface to paint on.

-If you get these paints in a spot they aren’t supposed to be (marks outside of your design or paint dripped onto your table, etc.) you can clean them up with a little bit of rubbing alcohol. Try to catch them before the paint has dried for too long! Use tape or stencils to help mask off areas on your dish that you don’t want paint to go.

-For dish art: Pebeo paints are non-toxic, but aren’t recommended for use on the parts of dishes that come in direct contact with food. So make sure to keep your artwork on the outside, handles, edges, etc. that won’t be touching your food or drinks.

-During the colder months of the year, be careful when transporting or storing your Pebeo markers. Letting them freeze can damage them quickly. Don’t leave them in a car when it’s super cold, and make sure a package doesn’t get delivered then sit outside for too long if it has Pebeo markers in it.

Simple directions for baking painted pieces:
(For ornamental items that won’t be washed, handled a lot, etc., you won’t need to use the baking method. The marks will remain on your item after just air drying.)

-After painting your design on a clean, dry surface, let the paint dry completely (around 24 hours).
-Make sure your entire piece can withstand hot temperatures. (Remove all stickers, tags, ornament strings, etc.)
-Place item in a cold oven so it can heat up gradually. Sudden drastic temperature changes could damage the item. Heat to 350°F and bake for 35 minutes.
-Turn off oven and leave your item inside until the oven cools down. Removing the item while hot could cause the heated paint to smudge.
-Your painted design is now sealed on and should be washable, even in the dishwasher! To ensure it lasts even longer, you can wash your pieces by hand using mild soap, and avoid abrasive scrubbing pads.

DISH ART

*Chalkboard name tags for drink glasses

Getting ready for a gathering of family & friends? To avoid getting people’s drink glasses mixed up with everyone else’s, try these fun ways of marking your holiday cups!

Paint a spot on your glasses with Pebeo Chalkboard Paint. Bake them to heat set the paint. Then each time you use a glass, mark who it belongs to with chalk or a removable chalkboard marker like the Marvy Bistro Chalk Markers! The chalkboard paint section will stay on when you wash it, and only the name will wash off- leaving it ready to be labeled again for its next user!

BLOG-nametagpebeodishes

Make a reusable checklist to label multiple drinks just the way each person likes them!
Use Pebeo paint to make the permanent background and checklist, and then use a temporary marker to mark on it.

*Making custom mugs

‘Tis the season to be enjoying hot beverages! Why not design your own mug? Custom coffee cups make great gifts for people too! Grab a plain mug and let it be a blank canvas for any kind of design you can think of.

Draw or letter your own design!

Use the fine or medium tip Porcelaine 150 markers for more controlled writing & drawing, or try the Porcelaine 150 paints for more freestyle painting, stamping or stenciling, etc.

Blog-outlinerdots
The Porcelaine 150 outliners work well for embellishing fine details! These marks will also add a raised effect.

Try painting with stamps, sponges, stencils- or a combination!

Let the kids scribble a special gift for someone!

Lots of kids just LOVE to color! Let them try something different than a piece of paper- how about making a mug! Pebeo markers are water-based, non-toxic, and do not contain harmful chemicals like Xylene- making them safer for kids to use (with supervision, of course!). Have them enjoy creating a fun keepsake piece for you, or a treasured gift for family members!

Special thanks to Laura, who shared with us the results of an awesome project she did with her 2 year old and Pebeo markers! What sweet mugs!!

PAINTED CANDLE JARS

Candles are very popular over the holidays, and during the winter season in general. Give your candles a special, colorful glow by custom painting jars for them! Grab some empty glass mason jars, widemouth cups, vases, etc. and paint with the Vitrea 160 markers.

blog-candles

You might need to make several layers of paint to get the color to look bolder.
Wait until the first layer dries before doing another, or the paint could smudge away.

You can also “pump” the valve-action tip of these markers several times on a surface to be used as a palette- pooling a bit of the paint so it can be applied with a paint brush or other tools!

………………………………………………………………………………………..

ORNAMENTS

Making your own ornaments and decorations can be a fun craft for the whole family! With glass & porcelain ornaments being popular (and easy to find at craft stores!), the Pebeo paints and markers come in handy for coloring these too!

Our Certified Zentangle Teacher, Jamie, showed us how to transfer some Zentangle designs done on paper with the Sakura Micron pens, onto a porcelain ornament using the Pebeo markers. The fine line of the Microns was a little hard to mimic with the Pebeo markers, but the results still looked great! Using the “Ahh” and “Hollibaugh” patterns, (which sounded the most in-season!) she created this beautiful Zentangle-style ornament:
